Revised Thesis Proposal

The Proposal contains a discussion of the systems designed for the DMA Building and some alternatives considered for further investigation. The Proposed alternatives are: Combined Heat and Power, Thermal Energy Storage, and System Optimization.

Combined Heat and Power will be analyzed to determine the feasiblity of on-site power generation. An analysis will be done to determine the required electricity as well as cooling and heating capacity of the CHP system.

Thermal Energy Storage will be evaluated based on peak shaving and cost savings of utilizing the system. Ice storage as well as chilled water storage will be compared based on space requirements, initial cost, and efficiency of the system.

System Optimization is discussed in two different parts. DOAS will be discussed in part A. Data center optimization will be discussed in part B

The two breadths proposed for analysis are electrical systems and an acoustical analysis due to a power generating prime mover in the mechanical rooms. Electrical systems will be evaluated due to replacement of chillers with absorption chillers and the room acoustics will be discussed due to the noise generated by the prime mover selected for the analysis.

MAE Course Related Study

As part of the MAE requirement, graduate level classes must be incorporated into the proposed changes in design. AE 557 is Central Cooling, where thermal storage was a topic that evaluated for peak shaving. This course related material will be used in the depth analysis of thermal storage for the DMA Building. AE 551 is Combined Heat and Power. This course will be taken during the spring semester during the evaluation of the proposed systems. CHP directly relates to the proposed cogeneration system for the building.
